Beshear's convincing victory

Steve Beshear's victory Tuesday was thorough, and well deserved.

Beshear won by a convincing 17-point margin, performing well in every part of the state - including Northern Kentucky, which had helped seat Fletcher in the Governor's Mansion four years ago. Beshear beat Fletcher in 11 of the 12 Northern Kentucky counties, and came within 302 votes of carrying the GOP fortress that is Boone County.

Fletcher had campaigned four years ago on a promise of cleaning up Frankfort, only to get caught up in a hiring scandal rooted in the ancient patronage abuses that have plagued Kentucky for ages. That scandal overshadowed everything else Fletcher did and doomed him to be a one-term governor.

This year Beshear made a similar campaign promise. He pledged to bring a bi-partisan spirit to Frankfort, to consult widely and work with legislators from both political parties to address Kentucky's needs. Now he needs to honor that commitment.
