Mongiardo makes stop in WinchesterNovember 03, 2007
Sen. Daniel Mongiardo focused on unity, health care and education while addressing the Winchester Rotary Club at their meeting Friday. The Democratic senator is on the ticket with gubernatorial candidate Steve Beshear. His stop in Winchester came just four days before the Nov. 6 election. Mongiardo spoke to the club directly following the Pledge of Allegiance. The last sentence of that pledge made him think, he told the crowd of about 100. “We all know the word ‘indivisible,’” he said. “But sometimes we just say it because we memorized it.” . . . Mongiardo shared the story of his older brother and later, his mother, dying at young ages because of a porous health care system. He spoke of his father dropping out of high school at age 15 to be the breadwinner for his family. And he offered solutions to make sure things like that don’t happen today. “We have a sick care system, not a health care system,” he said, declaring the need for health screenings to prevent illnesses or catch them at earlier stages. . . . Afterward, Rotary member Jack Buchanan stood to thank Mongiardo for his speech, telling him that it was the finest talk on issues rather than personality that he’d heard yet.
