Steve Beshear's victory Tuesday was thorough, and well deserved.

. . .

Beshear won by a convincing 17-point margin, performing well in every part of the state - including Northern Kentucky, which had helped seat Fletcher in the Governor's Mansion four years ago. Beshear beat Fletcher in 11 of the 12 Northern Kentucky counties, and came within 302 votes of carrying the GOP fortress that is Boone County.

Beshear, a lieutenant governor and attorney general in the 1980s, completed an unlikely political comeback by winning the governor's office -- a position he sought unsuccessfully 20 years ago.

He defeated Fletcher by about 17 percentage points, according to unofficial returns.
